Weather Threat Cancels School Activities
Columbus County Schools has cancelled all after school activities today due to the potential for severe weather. A strong storm system that brought tornadoes, inline winds and torrential rains from Oklahoma to Georgia will pass through the area later today (Wednesday). The National Weather Service puts Columbus at a Level 2 out of 5 for severe weather.
The main hazard for the Columbus County area will be damaging winds, with the possibility of spinup tornadoes that could damage trees and power lines. Gusts as high as 40 miles per hour are possible.
The NWS Wilmington office upgraded its forecast earlier to include a possibility of a tornado watch or warning later in the day. None have been issued as of 2 p.m.
