Verna (Simmons) Williamson

Verna Simmons Williamson, 94, of Lake Waccamaw joined the Church Triumphant on February 23, 2023. She was born in Hallsboro, NC on December 16, 1928 to Irvin Jasper Simmons and Thelma Inez Carroll Simmons.


She was a devoted Christian who believed in the transformative words of her savior Jesus Christ. She loved and was loved by the people of Lake Waccamaw and the Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church. She served her church as a greeter, women’s group leader, and member of the choir. She was a notorious visitor who was never far away when a friend or community member needed support. She normally came bearing food.


Verna was a renowned cook. Her friends and grandchildren will especially miss her chocolate pies, banana pudding, chicken and pastry, and macaroni and cheese.

She graduated from Hallsboro High School where she was an exceptional student.

She organized numerous class reunions and counted her classmates among her closest friends.


A lady of impeccable style, she worked as a buyer in the women’s department at Leder Brothers and was honored to have made a number of trips to New York City to purchase apparel for the store. She cherished the relationships she developed there.


Most of all, Verna loved her family. They will miss their matriarch dearly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Irvin Simmons and David Simmons, one sister, Faye Simmons Marks, and by her three children Diane Williamson Harrell, Thomas Michael Williamson, and Larry Wayne Williamson. She is survived by six grandchildren, Renee Long (Dan) of Wilmington, Anita Harrell of Lake Waccamaw, Rebecca Harrell of Chadbourn, Adam Williamson (Nicole) of Tampa, Florida, Anna Mabe (Matt) of Lake Waccamaw, and Alex Williamson (Taylor) of Greensboro; seven great-grandchildren, Brittany Harmon (Dustin), Chelsea and Canyon Jones, Greyson, Molly, and Erin Mabe, and Ellie Williamson; four great-great-grandchildren Isobel, Olivia, Lucas, and Emilia Harmon.


She also leaves behind a daughter-in-law Cindy Huggins and Cindy's daughter Patterson Huggins.

Verna shared a particularly special relationship with her sister, Faye. Faye passed on January 30, 2023 at the age of 90. The sisters will have a joint celebration of life service.

The families will receive visitors on March 4, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church. The joint funeral service will take place at 11 a.m.. A burial service for Verna at the Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery will follow.
