Nicole Could Bring Rain, Wind to Area
Updated: Nov 7, 2022
A late season tropical system may bring high winds and moderate rain to the Cape Fear region Thursday into Saturday.
Subtropical Storm Nicole was near the Bahamas this morning, the National Weather service said. The storm will likely take a westward track into Florida, then climb up the Atlantic Coast by the end of the week.
While the storm will likely pound south-facing beaches, forecasters are more worried about what is coming ahead of the storm.
Low humidity and gusty winds from the northeast will combine with current moderate drought conditions to make Tuesday a prime day for wildfires, the NWS warned. Much of Columbus is several inches below normal rainfall for the year so far, and forecasters are concerned a dry winter – as predicted – could lead to increased burning potential in the spring.
Strong gusty winds will occur Tuesday into Wednesday, the NWS said, and then return with Nicole’s visit Thursday into Saturday.
Nicole will bring “significant” impacts to the beaches and immediate coastal areas, the NWS said, and likely will drop one to three inches of badly needed rainfall in Southeastern North Carolina.
