"Coach" J.D. Gore 82, of Nakina passed on Saturday, December 10, 2022 in Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born July 3, 1940 in Columbus County the son of the late John B. Gore and Thelma Smith Gore.
Mr. Gore was a 1958 graduate of Nakina High School and was an All Columbus basketball player. J.D. graduated from Campbell College in 1960 with an associate degree. He received a Batchelors Degree in Education from East Carolina in 1962. He received a Masters Degree from UNC Pembrooke. After graduating from ECU he taught his first year at Evergreen School. He spent 26 years teaching and coaching basketball and baseball at Williams Township School. He completed his career as principal at Hallsboro High School. After retirement from education, he enjoyed keeping in touch with his former students and players. He was a recipient of the distinguished Order of Long Leaf Pine award in 2012. He was a lifelong member of Happy Home Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and many other positions in the church. His love for the Lord was evident in the life he lived. He served in the church since he was a young boy.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy Hyatt Gore; a daughter, Lynn Gore Rodgers and husband, James of Clayton, NC; four grandchildren, Caleb Allen Rodgers, Leah Hyatt Rodgers, John Gore Rodgers and Luke William Rodgers; a brother, McCoy Gore and wife, Phyllis of Nakina; a nephew, Matthew Gore and wife, Liz, their daughter, Kailyn Gore. His four grandchildren were a great joy and blessing in his life. He will be missed by his family and friends.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 am Thursday, December 15, 2022 at Happy Home Baptist Church with Dr.Al Watkins officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.
His family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 P-M Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at Peacock Funeral Home.
