Fiery Wreck Closes NC 87

One person was killed after a fiery crash between a tanker and a van closed N.C. 87 at the Hammond Bridge last night.

Chief Steve Camlin of Acme Delco Riegelwood Fire Rescue said the collision occurred just after 11 p.m. The tanker ended up off the bridge, spreading its cargo into a wooded swamp.

One victim was airlifted to UNC Burn Center.

The highway is blocked this morning. Motorists are advised to use N.C. 11 to U.S. 74.

Hazmat and fire crews are still on the scene.

This is a developing story.

The fatality is the first this year on Columbus County highways.
