Candy Customer Caught

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

The disgruntled candy customer who fired multiple shots into the Riegelwood Scotchman is in jail under $125,000 secured bond.

Michael Jerome Cherry Jr., 44, was charged Wednesday with discharging a weapon into occupied property, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, and simple assault. His address was listed as 100 Canal Rd., Riegelwood, on jail reports.

The sheriff’s office reported that Cherry entered the Scotchman store on Nov. 29 as the clerk was clearing the register. She asked him to wait while she finished, the report said. Cherry became agitated, and finally threw a handful of candy at the clerk.

Cherry then allegedly assaulted another customer outside the store, went to his vehicle and retrieved a firearm. He discharged multiple rounds into the store, but no one was injured.

State prison records show Cherry was convicted of trafficking in cocaine in 2001, and served three years and six months in prison.
