Bones Found in Abandoned Home
Updated: Nov 14
A runaway dog made a gruesome discovery in Fair Bluff Wednesday.
Fair Bluff Police Chief Chris Chafin said a woman was walking her dog on Steel Street when the dog slipped its leash and ran away. The dog entered an abandoned home, Chafin said, and when the woman went inside to catch the errant animal, she found skeletal remains.
“It was really just skin and bones,” Chafin said. “We couldn’t even tell if it was male or female. The individual had been there a long time.”
The body was found on the floor of the empty home, Chafin said. Evidence indicated that drugs might have played a role in the death, but that won’t be determined until an autopsy can be performed, he said.
“We do not suspect foul play,” Chafin said.
The property was overgrown with fallen trees, Chafin said. He did not know when it was last occupied.
The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist in the case.
