Bullets on the ground

Ronald Lee Cribbs has been identified as the victim in the June 20 shooting on Peacock Road. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case as a homicide.

Cribbs, 68, was killed inside his home at 4474 Peacock Road. The sheriff’s office said deputies were initially responding to a shots fired call at the home at 12:12 a.m. They found Cribbs inside. Two teenagers, ages 13 and 18, were uninjured.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said someone apparently fired multiple shots into the residence.

It wasn’t the first time the property was targeted bby criminals, according to the CCSO.

On Feb. 13, 2022, a drive by shooting occurred at the home. Cribbs was sitting in a vehicle and two juveniles were in the yard of the home when shots were fired from a vehicle on Peacock Road. There were no  injuries or property damage in that case.

In December 2022, deputies were twice called to the residence.

On Dec. 16, Brunswick Electric called 911 after discovering a fiber optic cable had been cut by a bullet.

On Dec. 26, reports show that someone shot at a vehicle on the property, striking it multiple times. The occupants were inside the home at the time, and no one was injured.

The killing is the eighth this year in Columbus, including three in Whiteville.
