One of two workers injured in a fire at HERR Environmental has died.

The man was seriously burned in the blast at the Maultsby Street operation, Fire Marshal Hal Lowder said Monday. The victim was airlifted to a burn center, where he later died of his injuries. His name has not been released.

HERR specializes in converting spilled fuels to solids that can be placed in landfills. The company is best known for emergency response to traffic accidents involving fuel and chemical spills.
Firefighters from multiple departments responded to assist Whiteville Monday when the call went out shortly after 4:30 p.m. Maultsby Street was shut down for a period to allow room for emergency vehicles. The fire was under control around 6 p.m.
The fire is still under investigation.
