Nakina Goes Virtual Wednesday

Covid-19 News

Lack of personnel is forcing Nakina Middle School to go virtual beginning tomorrow (Wednesday) through Friday.

Kelly Jones of the Columbus County school system said in a press release this afternoon (Tuesday) that COVID has drastically reduced the number of available classroom personnel.

“While we desire to keep school doors open,” Jones wrote, “a significant portion of staff members at Nakina Middle have been required to quarantine or isolate, and with a lack of available substitutes, there is not enough supervision to safely and effectively operate the school.”

The school has seen rising COVID case numbers in recent days in both students and staff, with multiple children and adults in quarantine.

“Closing school facilities is a serious step that is only taken after much consideration of the health, safety and well-being of our students,” he said.

Nakina is scheduled to resume in-person instruction on Monday, Jan. 24.
