The four-way stop at Peacock Road and Chadbourn Highway will remain in place.

Andrew Barksdale of the N.C. Department of Transportation said public comments about the proposed roundabout at the intersection were overwhelmingly against the plan, which would have affected the Peacock Stop store.

DOT has been shifting to more roundabouts at troublesome intersections after a 2020 study showed fewer crashes occurring at roundabouts that conventional intersections. Roundabouts require all traffic to stop or yield before turning to the right rather than continuing straight through the intersection.

After listening to comments from area residents, Barksdale said, DOT had additional information to consider. After additional research, it was determined the current traffic pattern with a four-way stop would be sufficient until 2040.

“This is a good example of the department being responsive to the community and ensuring an intersection is a long-term, viable and safe solution for traffic,” Barksdale said.
