Lake fire chief resigns

After almost two months serving as the town’s fire chief, Barney Tyler is leaving the department.

Tyler and firefighters Brian Wilson and Ricky Dorsey turned in their resignations over the weekend.

Tyler will stay on with the department for another two weeks. He said he will continue to participate with the department and help anyway he can.

Jerry Gore, who retired in June, will be returning to the department beginning Wednesday part-time, Mayor Daniel Hilburn said. Gore will serve as interim chief until town officials can fill the position.
Gore oversaw the rebuilding of the department after it closed in 2013 due internal problems and a failed inspection by the state. Since then, it has become one of the highest-rated departments in the county.

Mayor Daniel Hilburn bid the resigning chief goodbye in a statement Monday afternoon.

“We wish him the very best in the next step in his career,” says Hilburn.
