Willie Lowry

1930 – 2021

Our beloved Willie French Lowry was born in Pembroke, NC on September 11,1930 to the late John Roland and Lessie Lowry. The afternoon of Friday, August 27, 2021, Mr. Willie Lowry was reunited in Heaven with his late wife, Mary Helen Freeman of 64 years.

Mr. Willie loved talking to people and making the following statements starting with…

“Now let me tell you this and its something that I know, not something that I don’t know. But something that is the truth.”

He also loved calling his granddaughters “Lucy” when they were small.

Mr. Willie as a young man traveled and worked at the Dan River Mill in Danville, VA. He also served our Great Country in 1952 for a while in the US Army.

By trade Mr. Willie was a carpenter, along with having his own business of selling red worms which gave him the nickname of “The Worm  Man”. He went everywhere and people came from all over to get his worms. Mr. Willie never met a stranger and always talked about Jesus where ever he was. One of his greatest passions was playing his guitar and singing gospel music in church. He was a man of great Faith, always giving a lending hand by spreading God’s word doing it. He was a man with the greatest gift of all “Charity”!

He is survived by the following children, William “Dean” Lowery (wife Ann) of Boardman, Sandra Hernandez (late husband Gilbert) of Boardman, Bonnie Griffith (husband Michael Jenkins) of Bolton, French Lowery of Boardman, Shelton Lowery (wife Nancy Dunn) of Delco, and Christy Lowery of Southport. Along by 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren. Including 6 nieces and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lowry; a daughter, Janice Holland; a son, James Lowery; a son, Donwia Griffith; a great great granddaughter, Levianna Lowery; along with 7 brothers and 1 sister.

Mr. Willie was the last of his generation leaving something special to his family and everyone that knew him.

The family would like to express its appreciation and gratitude for your acts of kindness and love shown during the loss of our loved one. A special thank you to the NC Veterans Home Staff and Management team for the care and love that you gave to Willie Lowry and his family during his stay with you. In addition, a thank you to the staff at Peacock Funeral Home.
