Minnie Elease Godwin, age 81, of the Beaverdam Community died August 12, 2021 surrounded by her loving family in Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Whiteville. Born September 24, 1939 in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius Franklin Neal Powell and Gladys Mae “Pet” Ward Powell and the widow of Rev. Jackie Godwin.

Mrs. Minnie was an active member of Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church, where she faithfully served in many roles. Beside Preacher Jackie Godwin, Mrs. Minnie served as the Pastor’s wife for over 35 years. She also was a youth leader, an active member of the Woman’s Axillary both in the church and in the district where for many years she was the district Treasurer.

As a dedicated mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, she knew what it meant to care for others. Mrs. Minnie was a natural caregiver to many in her family and outside of her family.

She worked many years at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, her career at Southeastern started in 1964 as a secretary advancing to become the registrar and retiring after more than 30 years.

She is survived by her heart and son, William Neal Godwin and his wife Starr of Clarendon and her grandson, Cody Godwin and Cody’s loving girlfriend, Alison Walker.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her grandsons, the Godwin Triplets and a sister, Evelyn Powell.

Mrs. Minnie will lie in state in the Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church on Sunday, August 15, 2021 from 1:30 to 3:00 PM.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 3:00 PM in the Beaverdam Original Free Will Baptist Church with burial to follow in Hinson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the committal service in the cemetery.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and wearing a mask is encouraged to be worn.
