Mayor Daniel Hilburn reads the resolution honoring the DYB World Champion Riegelwood team Tuesday. The boys were later the guests of honor at a dinner at El Juan restaurant.

Cheers rang out in Lake Waccamaw Town Hall Tusday evening as the Riegelwood Dixie Youth Boys baseball team was honored.

The team, known as “The Wood,” became N.C. State Division II champions back in July. The kids and their coaches, Tyree Waddell and Josh Simmons, and team manager, Greg Jacobs, then traveled to Mississippi last week where they won the 2021 Dixie Youth Baseball World Series Division II Championship.

Mayor Daniel Hilburn recognized and praised each member of the team, and the Lake Waccamaw Town Council proclaimed August 2021 Riegelwood Dixie Youth World Series Champions month.

“Every member of this team with the exception of two of the players, traveled to Mississippi in July of 2017 where they placed third in the world series that year. This is a wrap up from 2017,” announced the enthusiastic mayor.

Each member of the team was given an official copy of the proclamation, signed by Hilburn and all the Town Council members, to take home to commemorate the occasion. The Town Council also pitched in for dinner for the whole team at the El Juan Mexican restaurant where Ms. Ana Cruz awaited their arrival.
