Woman dies from Wednesday crash injuries

An avid church member and former substitute teacher has died from injuries sustained in a traffic crash on U.S. 74-76 Wednesday.

Bernice “Mickey” Little McKeithan, 90, was airlifted after a wreck near the N.C. 11 intersection, according to Acme Delco Riegelwood Fire Chief Steve Camlin. The driver of the second vehicle was transported by ambulance to New Hanover with non-life threatening injuries.
Mrs. McKeithan later died of her injuries at New Hanover Regional.

The crash snarled traffic for more than an hour, causing a detour.

Mrs. McKeithan was a faithful and busy member of Bolton Baptist Church, where she served as the assistant church clerk, and was a former nursery, primary and youth teacher, church treasurer,  clerk and recording secretary. She was previously a secretary and payroll clerk at Piedmont Industries in Bolton, and substitute teacher at Hallsboro High School.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Mrs. McKeithan was the 11th highway fatality in Columbus County this year. The last occurred in June, when a man lost control of his Jeep Cherokee and crashed on Delco Prosper Road.
