Detectives and deputies raided a Queen Street home this afternoon and arrested a Tabor City man for Sunday night shooting that left a Hope Mills man dead.

Mark Anthony Nelson, 23, was arrested just before 3 p.m., according to Chief Deputy Aaron Herring of the sheriff’s office. Nelson was wanted for the Sunday night ambush of George Stump of Hope Mills and his grandson Tristan Stavee on Sellerstown Road. The grandson was killed, and the older man is in critical condition at New Hanover Regional.

Nelson allegedly lured the men to a home in the 100 block of Sellerstown Road around 7 p.m. under the pretext of selling a car. Nelson allegedly shot both men.

Court records show Nelson was arrested earlier this year with his father in Chadbourn. Nelson and Anthony Tyrone Nelson, 42, were jailed after multiple complaints about narcotics related activity in the area of Institute Street, Chadbourn. Chadbourn police raided the home and confiscated a quantity of drugs, as well as a Model 26 Glock handgun reported stolen from Country Boys Outfitters in Whiteville.

In 2017, Mark Anthony Nelson was arrested by deputies and federal marshals for firing into a vehicle containing a woman and two toddlers in the Whiteville area. The children were unhurt, but the woman was struck several times. She later recovered. In 2019, Horry County Police arrested him after he and another man allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint over a haircut.

Mark Anthony Nelson was also listed as the victim of a drive-by shooting in Whiteville on Dec. 18, 2018.

  1. Another case of someone who should not be out walking the streets kills innocent people. I think whoever allowed that to happen should be liable for tge death.

  2. Complete trash …..criminals like this don’t deserve basic human rights and are incapable of living in a productive society. This is an example of a criminal who has showed definitively that he will not work for what he wants and needs and will never be productive for the duration of his life and deserves what he did to this innocent person ten fold.

  3. Why was this thug still out on streets to kill a young man and about killing his grandfather. HE SHOULD get deathe penalty just like the young man life he took

  4. Why was he let back on the streets , the judge that let him back out on the streets I hope he can sleep at night knowing what he did , he deserves to die and deserves to die now we should not have to pay in taxes waiting on death row he’s not worth the time it took to make his sorry ass.

  5. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. How the hell is this scumbag out on the streets with a record like he has? The judge must be crazy to let him walk the streets. May he rot in Hell.
