COVID cases top 900; no new deaths

The Columbus County Health Department has multiple resources for dealing with COVID-19 on its social media platforms.

Columbus County reported 908 confirmed COVID 19 cases in its twice-weekly report today (Monday). 

The health department updates local data every Monday and Thursday. 

Today’s report showed 13 additional cases on Aug. 6, 15 on Aug. 7, four on Aug. 8, three on Aug. 9, and five new cases today, Aug. 10. Six residents are currently hospitalized.

A total of 48 county residents have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March. Health Department Spokesman Daniel Buck said in a press release that the county will be providing additional information about recoveries in Thursday’s update.

Statewide, the Division of Health and Human Services reported 1,111 people hospitalized as of Monday. More than two million tests have been completed, with 136,844 lab confirmed cases. The state is slowly trending downward in positive test results and hospitalizations.

Columbus County statistics are not broken down by race on the state DHHS website, except to tag patients as Hispanic or non-Hispanic. Ten percent of the county’s reported and confirmed cases have been from the Latino community, according to DHHS.

Age breakdowns show 34 percent of the county’s patients to be from 25-49 years old, with 26 percent 50-64, eight percent 64-75, and nine percent 75 and older. Younger patients ages 18-24 make up 13 percent of the case totals, with 0-17 at 10 percent.

Women significantly outnumber male patients, 56 to 44 percent.

COVID fatalities in Columbus County currently range from two percent for ages 25-49, 33 percent in the 50-64 bracket, 19 percent from 65-74 years of age, and 46 percent 75 and over. Men make up 38 percent of the fatal cases, and females 63 percent. Latinos make up two percent of the fatal cases.

Free COVID-19 tests are available Tuesday at the Brunswick Town Hall on Poplar Street from 9 until 1. Thursday, Thursday, on Aug. 13, testing will be available at Riegelwood Community Park. No appointment is required, and you do not have to have symptoms to be tested. The tests are free, but you will be asked if you have insurance. Results will generally be available in 36-48 hours.
