Fire under investigation

A storage shed was destroyed early Sunday morning after a fire that could be seen across Lake Waccamaw.

Deputy Fire Marshal Chase Lancaster said the fire, which was reported n Bella Coola just after midnight, had completely engulfed the storage building when fire crews arrived minutes after the 911 call.

“We had a great turnout and a quick knockdown, but it was already gone,” Lancaster said.

Firefighters said there were propane tanks, gasoline and other fuels in the shelter. A lawn mower and other items were destroyed. No injuries were reported. The blaze could reportedly be seen from across the end of Lake Waccamaw, and caused at least one additional 911 call when a resident saw the flames in the distance.

Investigators were back on the scene today (Monday) attempting to determine the cause of the fire.
